Looking Back : August 2011

I read 4 books last month.
-
1. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling
2. The Passage by Justin Cronin
3. The Last Little Blue Envelope by Maureen Johnson
4. The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon

It was a very slow reading month in August but I really enjoyed the books I did read. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was a re-read and after re-reading The Philosopher's Stone in July I think I actually like Chamber of Secrets a bit more! Although they are both still brilliant. The Passage was fantastic and the creatures in the book are enough to give you nightmares. A great horror book. The Last Little Blue Envelope was every bit as good as it's predecessor and it makes you want to take off on your own adventure. Lastly, The Shadow of the Wind was a book that lived up to it's expectations; a book that transcends many genres and has the feel of a classic Victorian thriller.

So overall a great reading month even if it was a bit slow. I'm sad to be leaving behind Summer with it's warm and long days but I feel like I got the most of it with a week in Cornwall at the end of August. We didn't have one day of bad weather which is very unusual for the UK! We went around the usual haunts including Padstow, Tintagel, Wadesbridge and Daymar Bay. So I feel like I'm ready for Autumn now and can't wait to get stuck back into reading :)

The Chamber of Secrets was my favourite of the first 3 Potter books, although I fear this is an unpopular opinion. It was what made me realise how solid the world-building was going to be, when throwaway moments from the first book ended up as huge plot points in Book 2. And Gilderoy Lockhart is still my favourite DADA teacher - he was hilarious! It's also when I first realised that it was going to be Ron + Hermoine.
